LIGHT AT LAST: NIGERIA TO BUILD MEGA POWER EQUIPMENT PARK WITH CHINA’S TBEA — END OF TRANSFORMER IMPORTATION
GREATRIBUNETVNEWS –NIGERIA is set to build a massive Power Equipment Industrial Park to manufacture transformers, cables and other critical power gear locally — ending decades of crippling import dependence.
The deal was sealed by Power Minister, Joseph Tegbe, at a high-stakes meeting with Chinese energy giant TBEA in Beijing, under the Presidential Power Initiative.
Tegbe said the park will not just power Nigeria — it will turn the country into an exporter of power equipment, slash costs, create thousands of jobs, and grow local suppliers.
He hailed TBEA not as a contractor, but as a strategic partner bringing technology, factory, and future to Nigeria.
In a statement, the Chinese firm also renewed its commitment to accelerate delivery of ongoing transmission and distribution projects across the country, including works expected to unlock more than 2,000MW of stranded capacity for consumers and strengthen bulk power supply to the Federal Capital Territory.
Tegbe emphasised the need for faster completion of Presidential Power Initiative works and urged an extension of planned grid infrastructure to the East-West corridor, underscoring government’s insistence that contracted and substantially developed projects be brought to completion so Nigerians can begin realizing their benefit.
The engagement also explored the feasibility of electric-vehicle charging infrastructure in Nigeria, opening a new front for investment as the country’s grid modernizes around renewable energy and storage technologies.
The outcomes from Beijing reflect a broader shift underway in Nigeria’s power sector: from a market that imports equipment to one that builds it, from stranded capacity to power that reaches homes and industries, and from short-term contracts to lasting partnership. .
