“OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY ADDS 19 NIGERIAN WORDS, INCLUDING ‘YAHOO BOY, ‘JAPA, ‘SUYA”

GREATRIBUNETVNEWS-The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has officially recognized Nigerian English by adding 19 Nigerian words to its updated version. These words include “Yahoo boy”, “japa”, “suya”, “agbero”, “eba”, and 14 others that reflect Nigeria’s culture and creativity.
Kingsley Ugwuanyi, a Nigerian consultant for the OED, announced the update on X and LinkedIn, expressing his excitement about the inclusion of Nigerian slang. Mr. Ugwuanyi revealed that he drafted most of the new entries and provided their pronunciations.
“This time, I not only drafted most of the words but also had the incredible opportunity to provide their #pronunciations!” The man wrote excitedly on X. “So, when you explore the OED online on the pronunciations,you’ll hear my #voice bringing these words to life ”
The updated OED now includes Nigerian words that are commonly used in everyday conversation, showcasing the unique ways Nigerians express themselves.
