GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of the Syrian Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), delivered a victory speech at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, sending a powerful message to various stakeholders, including Iran, the US, and Israel.
Jolani, who has transformed from a young al-Qaeda fighter to a rebel commander advocating sectarian tolerance, emphasized that his victory is a triumph for the entire Islamic nation.
In his speech, Jolani addressed the newly liberated Syrians, acknowledging the sacrifices of martyrs, widows, and orphans. He also signaled his intention to break down sectarian barriers, which have long defined social classes and fueled conflicts in Syria.
Jolani’s message to Iran was clear: their influence in Syria is over, and their support for Hezbollah and other proxies will no longer be tolerated. He also acknowledged the interests of the US and Israel, implying that he understands their concerns and is willing to work with them.
The rebel leader’s speech was also tuned for regional powers, promising to eradicate corruption and criminality, which have plagued Syria under Assad’s rule. Jolani’s HTS group has been designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the US, which has a $10 million bounty on his head.
