GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–NIGERIA’S Super Falcons will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time ever after a painful 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the 2027 World Cup playoff in Casablanca on Thursday night.
The loss shatters Nigeria’s proud, unbroken record of appearing at every single edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991- a 32-year streak no other African team could boast.
How The Dream Died
The 10-time African champions dominated possession in the first half at the Moulay Rachid Stadium, but were toothless where it mattered most against a disciplined, resolute Banyana defence.
Punishment came in the 56th minute. Banyana’s talisman *Thembi Kgatlana* broke Nigerian hearts, finishing off a devastating counter-attack to fire South Africa in front and seal Nigeria’s most painful exit in women’s football history.
Captain Refiloe Jane doubled the lead 13 minutes from time with a composed finish, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb.
The Super Falcons were handed a lifeline in the closing stages when Jane handled the ball inside the box. The South Africa captain was shown a second yellow and sent off.
Substitute Christy Ucheibe stepped up and converted the resulting penalty to reduce the deficit to 2-1. But there was too little time left for Nigeria to mount a comeback.

With the defeat, Nigeria’s qualification campaign is over.
South Africa advance to the inter-confederation playoffs alongside Ghana’s Black Queens, who also secured their spot on Thursday.
For the Super Falcons, it is the first time they will watch a Women’s World Cup from home since the tournament began 36 years ago.
Coach and players are expected to address the media later today as the Nigeria Football Federation begins a review of the team’s qualifying campaign.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup is scheduled to hold in Brazil.
