President Bola Tinubu is putting the finishing touches on the list of new ambassadors to replace those withdrawn from Nigeria’s foreign missions nearly two years ago. The list is undergoing final vetting, with background checks and screenings being conducted on potential appointees.
This development comes after Tinubu recalled all career and non-career ambassadors in September 2023, just six months into his presidency. Since then, he has appointed consuls-general and chargés d’affaires to fill the gap, but the positions of ambassadors remain vacant.
The delay in appointing new ambassadors has raised concerns among foreign officials and stakeholders, who have been awaiting the President’s decision. Despite receiving multiple letters of credence from foreign ambassadors posted to Nigeria, Tinubu has kept mum on the issue.
According to reports, part of the vetting process involves sharing information gathered from the screening with relevant agencies within the presidency and legislature. This thorough approach aims to ensure that only the most suitable candidates are appointed to represent Nigeria’s interests abroad.
With the final vetting underway, Nigerians and the international community eagerly await the announcement of the new ambassadors, marking a significant development in the country’s diplomatic relations.
