
HEAT STRESS ALERT: NiMet WARNS 19 STATES TO PREPARE FOR RISING TEMPERATURES

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a critical heat stress warning to residents in 19 states, citing rising temperatures and high humidity levels that may cause thermal discomfort across several regions . The affected states include those in the North-Central and Eastern regions, such as Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) .
Vulnerable Regions
In addition to the North-Central and Eastern regions, other vulnerable areas include:
– South-West Region : Residents in this region especially Oyo State are advised to take precautions against heat stress.
Other Areas : Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto are among the areas that may experience heat stress.
Health Risks and Precautions
NiMet warned that the heat stress may lead to potential health risks, including:
– Fatigue
– Irritability
– Reduced focus
– Impaired motor skills
– Decreased productivity
To mitigate these risks, residents in affected regions are advised to take the following precautions:
– Stay cool by using fans, air conditioning, or shaded spaces.
– Dress lightly by wearing breathable clothing.
– Drink plenty of water and avoid peak sun hours (12 pm – 3 pm).
– Use sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
