GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–Oyo State Governor, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the tragic stampede during the Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, face trial, regardless of their status. The incident claimed the lives of over 35 children.
Makinde emphasized that the rule of law must be upheld in the state, and that accountability is essential for delivering justice to the victims and their families. He clarified that while he is not opposed to the court granting bail to the suspects, the judicial process must take its course.
The governor addressed concerns raised by some individuals regarding similar incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that did not lead to prosecutions, stating, “Even if nobody is held accountable elsewhere, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail.” He further asserted, “Oyo State is not Anambra State, and no matter how highly placed, justice must be done.”
Makinde also acknowledged the challenges faced in the past year, including an explosion in Bodija and the stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, saying, “May we never witness such tragedy again in Oyo State.”
In addition to addressing the stampede incident, Makinde also touched on the ongoing security challenges posed by bandits entering the state from northwestern regions. He assured residents that his administration will work tirelessly to eliminate all forms of insecurity and announced plans to launch a special operation targeting wrongdoers relocating to the state.
The governor urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to authorities, emphasizing, “It is in our collective interest.” He also expressed his gratitude to security commanders and operatives for their dedication to maintaining peace in the state.
Furthermore, Makinde announced that his administration will finalize discussions on reviewing pension remuneration in light of the new minimum wage and consequential adjustments. This move is aimed at improving the welfare of pensioners in the state.
In her address of welcome, the state Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, commended the governor for his worker-friendly policies and encouraged employees to remain diligent in their duties.
