GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–Nigerian Police have been accused of acting unjustly and in breach of natural justice principles by arresting human rights activist Dele Farotimi on unproven defamation allegations. Defamation is no longer a criminal offense in Lagos State, having been decriminalized in 2011 .
The police action has been condemned as oppressive and an abuse of power, constituting a breach of Farotimi’s fundamental rights. Former President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and right activist, Lanre Ogundipe, has demanded Farotimi’s unconditional release from police custody, citing the failure of the police legal department to advise operational agents on the decriminalization of defamation in Lagos State .
