GREATRIBUNTVNEWS–Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called on the Federal Government to expedite work on the country’s refineries, beyond just the Port Harcourt refinery.
According to TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, having all four refineries operational would generate at least 400,000 barrels per day and foster healthy competition in the oil and gas sector .
He added ” We have heard reports that the Port Harcourt Refinery has resumed processing of crude oil, but we are working to validate this claim. Beyond this, we urge the government to expedite work on other refineries, including Warri, Kaduna and the new Port Harcourt refinery.
Osifo emphasized that restoring the refineries to full operation would break the monopoly in the oil and gas downstream sector. He also commended the government for the progress made so far, but urged them to do more.
In addition to the call for refinery revitalization, Osifo criticized the governments of Cross River and Zamfara states for delays in announcing plans for implementing the new minimum wage. He cautioned the two states to prioritize workers’ welfare and come up with consequential adjustments.
