GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, former Undersecretary General of the United Nations, has sounded the alarm on the emerging new cold war and its potential destabilizing consequences for Africa.
Speaking at the 12th Annual Lecture of Realnews Magazine in Lagos, Gambari emphasized that the big powers are directly involved, while middle powers are implicated either directly or by proxy.
Gambari noted that Africa is at the center of a new scramble, with various powers setting up military bases across the continent. He stated that the entire seaboard of Africa is already dotted with military bases operated by various powers, highlighting the intense geo-strategic interests in the region.
The former Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari urged Africans to take a step back and reflect on the changing global landscape. He emphasized the need for Africa to leverage its youthful population and abundant human and natural resources to drive development and achieve structural transformation.
Gambari also stressed the importance of Africa being proactive in shaping the new world order. He noted that the continent cannot afford to sit on the sidelines while the rules of the new world order are being written.
Instead, Africa must insist on being a joint rule-maker to ensure that the new global order reflects its values and aspirations for a fairer, more inclusive, and equitable world.
