GREATRIBUNTVNEWS–The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to replace obsolete and faulty prepaid meters at no cost to customers . This directive is in line with the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry Act, which prohibits DisCos from billing customers for meter replacement.
Key Points:
– _Free Replacement_: DisCos must replace faulty meters without charging customers.
– _Reporting Non-Compliance_: Customers should report cases of non-compliance to NERC for prosecution.
– _Contravention of Order_: DisCos’ instruction to customers to pay for replacement contravenes NERC’s Order No. NERC/246/2021.
– Report cases of non-compliance to the order by any DisCo through the following channels: 07000 CALL NERC [ 07000 2255 6372]; 0201 344 4331; 0908 899 9244 . Email: complaints@nerc.gov.ng”
NERC emphasized that customers should not be subjected to estimated billing due to DisCos’ failure to replace faulty meters ². Instead, DisCos must inspect meters and replace them at their own cost. Customers are advised to notify NERC if their DisCo fails to comply with this directive.
What to Do:
– _Check Meter Status_: Verify the billing status of your apartment before renting.
– _Report Issues_: Notify DisCo in writing if you’re billed for energy consumed by a previous tenant.
– _Verify Billing_: Ensure your bill is accurate and based on actual meter readings.
Stay informed about your rights as a electricity consumer and report any discrepancies to NERC.
