OYO DEPUTY GOVERNOR BARR BAYO LAWAL COMMENDED OVER EXTENSION OF ADMISSION QUOTA OF BASIC MIDWIFERY PROGRAM
The Deputy Governor of Oyo state, Barrister Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, has been commended for his efforts to address the critical shortage of healthcare workers caused by the mass exodus of professionals.
This commendation stems from his intervention in extending the admission quota of the basic midwifery programme at both the Ibadan and Kishi campuses.
Due to the Oyo Deputy Governor’s involvement, the two campuses which initially admitted roughly 100 students yearly, will now admit 100 students each in order to accommodate the increased number of medical students.
This was contained in a letter from the NURSING & MIDWIFERY COUNCIL OF NIGERIA and addressed to the Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery. The letter with the reference number NMCN/S&A/OYSCONS/VOL.1/26 and dated 19th, March, 2024, was signed by Ndagi Alhassan, the Director Nursing/Head, Standard and Accreditation Department For Registrar/CEO and seen by our correspondent.
The letter titled: RE: REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OF ADMISSION QOUTA OF BASIC MIDWIFERY PROGRAMME FROM ONE HUNDRED (100) TO ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY (150).
“Your letter on above mentioned subject refers. I am directed to inform you that, the maximum admission quota the Council can allow for Basic Midwifery programme is One Hundred (100) students only. In view of your request, the Registrar/CEO has approved an increase in admission quota for both Campuses (Ibadan and Kishi) to One Hundred (100) each, effective from March 2024.
“It is our hope that you will continue to maintain excellence and standard in Nursing and Midwifery Education in your institution. Please accept the highest regard of the Registrar/CEO.”
It was gathered that the provost in connection with the Deputy Governor linked up with the Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council to ensure that the extension comes to reality.
The Deputy Governor was specially commended by the management for being instrumental in making the extension a reality after many years.
The extension will help address Nigeria’s severe scarcity of healthcare personnel, which is a result of a large-scale exodus of experts.
“This significant increase, approved by NMCN marks a pivotal moment for aspiring medical students,” said the management.
